The collection’s fourth story, “North Of” (a 2007 Pushcart winner), exemplifies Bertino’s aesthetic. These poignant and darkly funny stories function less as departures from realism than as visions of familiar realities metaphorically enhanced. (College misfits wield superpowers a totemic celebrity and an alienated alien make cameo appearances.) A clever writer with a consistently disarming voice, Bertino commits wholeheartedly to the peculiarities of the worlds she creates and plays them out with verve and precision. Drawing deeply on American pop-culture, Bertino takes quotidian dramas-stories of heartbreak and alienation, depression and fraught familial relationships-and amplifies them with playful and fantastical conceits. The eight stories in Marie-Helene Bertino’s debut collection occupy worlds both recognizable and resolutely askew. Please avoid all-caps, especially in thread topics, as it is considered SHOUTING. It follows Phoebe Somerville, a New York socialite with an outrageous reputation who inherits a pro football team and a teenage half-sister when her father dies. It Had to Be You is the first in the Chicago Stars series. There is basically no wrong choice when it comings to picking up a Susan Elizabeth Phillips novel, but here are my suggestions for where to start. Some of them seem a bit dated now (she’s been publishing for over thirty years) but they are still books I return to again and again. Equal parts funny and romantic, I always fall in love with her quirky leading ladies and macho, misunderstood leading men. She also won the groups Lifetime Achievement Award. While Nora Roberts’s novels skew towards the serious and suspenseful, Susan Elizabeth Phillips is known as the “Queen of Romantic Comedy.” Furthermore, Phillips is the only five-time winner of the Romance Writers of America Favorite Book of the Year. When it comes to contemporary romance, I’ve always considered the two masters to be Nora Roberts and Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Nate didn’t have an easy life and nothing about this book was easy too. Half Lostby Sally Green – It was as beautiful as it was heartbreaking. It’s the perfect ending to a perfect story. The Raven Kingby Maggie Stiefvater – It’s Maggie and It’s Gansey, Blue, Ronan, Adam and Noah.It delved into matters trauma and emotional abuse but still keep the story flowing. Maas – After a so-so first book this one was a real game changer for the series as a hole. It’s quite a thrill ride and it left a real cliffhanger as to how the series is going to end. A Torch Against the Nightby Sabaa Tahir – A cross between historical fiction and dystopian novel. Not to mention his characters get sassier with every book. I love that Rick has added diverse characters to his worlds. Hammer of Thor by Rick Riordan – So it was hard to pick between this one and his other book Riordan wrote, The Hidden Oracle, but I choose this one because of the characters. So without further ado and in no particular order. It was hard to narrow it down to just 10. I will say this about 2016, I read a lot of good books this year. Instead of being grateful, Israel rebelled and complained (vv. He reminds them how God defeated the Egyptian army and provided for His people in the wilderness (vv. The Psalmist reflects on God’s deliverance of Israel from Egypt. The goal is not just to learn history, but to trust in the God revealed by it. The Psalmist in today’s reading recounts God’s history with His people so that the next generation would “put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds” (vv. One way we can know God’s character is by reflecting on how He has related to His people. He understood that it was possible for someone to have sound theology, know the Bible well, be involved in ministry, and yet not really have a relationship with God. Packer points out the difference between knowing about God and knowing God. His heart was lined up but his words didn't get across. But no, men can be difficult to figure out and Lesto has been self contained and focused for years, has an image, and for whatever reason. He should be mature enough that when someone like Lesto focuses on him, it's solid. And that's a little hard to believe since Shemal is in his 40's. It was no wonder things fell apart and of course Shemal's confidence flagged. Lesto spent very little time with Shemal and in true man fashion never said much. While this was a nice continuation in the series, it didn't match the first. Once again bodies falling left and right. Thank goodness they were on the same page otherwise they wouldn't have survived. Both men walked away from each other, hurt, and in an odd twist of fate they meet up again, air their differences, and start all over. As I had read these two books back to back I couldn't pinpoint that meeting. Lesto and Shemal met in the first book but it was barely touched on. Because pirates love jewels and earrings of course! The muscle bound hunk in this story is Shemal, he of the thick thighs and even thicker long hair with a love of earrings. I was surprised to read Lesto's physical form: He wasn't this muscle bound warrior but instead a slim supple man with a core of strength. Lesto is the right hand of the high king - Advisor, military commander, and brother-in-law. The Pirate of Fathoms Deep is Lesto and Shemal's story. |
